BOFA’s FireBOX enhancements help to improve workplace safety

Sep 3, 2018 | News & Articles

BOFA International has unveiled new and improved versions of its FireBOX technology to further help in reducing the risk of fire in the workplace.
The new patent-pending units, independently tested by Ordnance Testing Solutions Ltd, are designed to meet the requirements of all classes of fire, from those caused by liquid and gases to wood, metal and combustible materials in general.

The applications that BOFA customers rely upon for extraction solutions continue to grow, notably in the laser industry where certain processes present a persistent risk of embers or self-igniting particulate. BOFA’s new FireBOX GA (General Application) and FireBOX MA (Metal Application) are purpose-designed to manage and mitigate these risks.

This technology is critical because if a burning ember is drawn into a fume extraction unit, there is a possibility that debris in filters can ignite and cause significant system damage. The FireBOX GA and MA units have been developed as an inline solution firstly to capture particulate at risk of ignition and secondly to extinguish any fire resulting from the particulate.

The addition of a warning beacon on both the GA and MA gives the operator clear indication of the condition of the system and BOFA has included two electronically controlled motorised valves to seal off the system in the event of a fire, as Product Manager, Richard Heard explains:

The new units are designed for added safety and protection. They have a built-in temperature controller which can be set so when a 10ºC (18ºF) temperature rise is detected, the FireBOX will automatically activate the isolating valves and switch off the power to the extraction unit, suppressing the airflow to the FireBOX and reducing the potential for fire spread. If this doesn’t stop the fire and the temperature rises by another 10ºC (18ºF), then the fire extinguisher will be activated.

These type of product innovations reinforce BOFA’s position as a world leader in fume and dust extraction technology. The new units are available from distributors worldwide.
